Marsh Certified to Perform TS 16949 Process Audits

Wonder Lake – David Marsh has been certified by the International Automotive Oversight Board (IAOB) to perform process audits in the automotive industry.  The certification means that Marsh can now perform third party audits for registration of automotive suppliers to the ISO/TS 16949:2002 Standard through accredited registrars. The certification also qualifies Marsh to perform 2nd party and internal audits in compliance with the Standard’s requirements.

McHenry County and surrounding area manufacturers will be able to dramatically reduce travel expenses associated with their registrations as a result of Marsh’s certification.  Auditors are often brought in from other states or even other countries to provide registration services to local manufacturers.  The airfare, hotel, and other travel expenses combined can sometimes be as much or more than the registration fees, doubling the overall cost of registration to the manufacturer.  Using Marsh, local manufacturers are typically only responsible for mileage expenses between his office in Wonder Lake and the audited plant-site.

“I definitely don’t need a flight or hotel to audit a company in Crystal Lake,” says Marsh.

However, Marsh believes his primary value to local manufacturers will be as a consultant.

“Consulting projects, aside from internal or 2nd party audits, typically run longer than registration audits.  If you have to put up a consultant in a hotel for a couple of weeks, with meals and travel, that could easily run three or four thousand dollars, or more.  Moreover, the fact that I live here, right here with my Clients, means I have a vested interest in their success.”

Marsh believes that by helping local manufacturers become stronger competitively and more profitable as businesses, he is helping to strengthen the fabric of the community.  “I live here,” he said.  “I want our businesses, our tax base, our schools, and our government to be strong.  I get to travel to hundreds of plants all over the world, see the best practices implemented under a variety of conditions, and bring those lessons-learned back here to McHenry County and the surround communities.  I love that part of my job!”

Marsh has also seen what happens to communities and economies when local industries lose market to foreign competition.  “I’ve seen the effects in places like Youngstown, Ohio, or Flint Michigan.  Closer to home, look at what happened to Rockford, and to a lesser degree in Elk Grove and Schiller Park and their neighborhoods in the 90’s.  I want my community to be strong, vibrant, and a commercial and industrial hallmark.  There is nothing I enjoy more than helping local companies be successful doing exactly what it is that they love to do.”

Helping local companies effectively and efficiently establish and maintain systems to support their ISO or TS registrations is one of the services Business Consulting Services provides.  Business Consulting Services meets with company owners and managers to determine the goals they want their companies to achieve.  For companies looking to grow their business, registration is often a first step toward increasing sales.  Business Consulting Services works with each unique manufacturer to understand their culture, with their strengths and weaknesses, and then designs systems specifically tailored to those traits.

“There is nothing more annoying than seeing a company trying to keep up with a bunch of paperwork and meaningless requirements that they don’t need in the first place, just because someone sold them a canned system and told them they had to do it in order to be registered.  The fact is, the system worked well for the consultant!  The manufacturer inevitably stumbles – sometime after the consultant has already moved on – and is left to wonder why they ever got into the mess in the first place because the system they established to become registered never had any value for their processes.”

“When a system is designed specifically to meet a manufacturer’s goals, when it helps the company make more money, get more sales, and improve their image in the market, good manufacturers just naturally want to support a system like that.  They can’t help but have a successful registration process.”

Marsh believes packaged systems sold commercially by consulting agencies often do more harm than good.  Since every company has its own personality, the requirements and controls that one company uses may not be effective for another.

“People don’t want to change when they know they’re doing a good job.  Canned systems force people to change to comply with the new system, not to make the company better.  That’s wasteful and stressful, and it’s contrary to the goal or purpose of any Standard I’ve ever worked with.”

“I’d rather accept what a company is doing well, find out what they’d like to do better, and use my experience to help them make those improvements.  That makes for good industry, and that makes for good communities.  I want that to be my community.”
